Along with downhill, super-G is considered a speed event. The gates are the same as in giant slalom but spaced further apart, allowing greater speeds that often exceed 100 km/hr. Super-G is a compromise between downhill and giant slalom, wherein lies its technical difficulty.
Contrary to downhill, where competitors make a practice run before the official race, super-G does not allow this and there is only one run.
This requires technical expertise with a feel for the snow so one can let the skis run and achieve maximum speed. Skiers push themselves as close to the limit as possible to achieve the fastest times.
